Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage encompasses a variety of therapeutic techniques designed to reach and manipulate the layers of soft tissue beneath the skin’s surface. This approach to massage therapy is designed to relax and lengthen these tissues, promoting injury recovery, pain relief and the restoration of proper posture and body mechanics (how your body moves).
Muscles can become imbalanced because of injury or repetitive daily movements, such as sitting at a desk for extended periods, poor posture or playing a sport that utilizes one part of your body more than others.
Therapeutic Massage
A therapeutic massage incorporates different styles of massage techniques. and is a type of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practice that is often used to treat muscle pain, injury, and stiffness. From a lighter touch to a deeper therapy, it can be personalized to your unique physical capacity.
TMJ
TMJ massage, short for temporomandibular joint massage, is a specialized therapeutic approach aimed at addressing issues related to the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Unlike traditional massages that encompass the entire body, TMJ massage usually hones in on the intricate muscles responsible for jaw movement. Its primary goal is to alleviate TMJ pain and enhance overall jaw function. While the specific techniques employed during a TMJ massage may vary from practitioner to practitioner, the overarching objective remains consistent – providing targeted relief for those grappling with jaw pain and dysfunction.
One distinctive and often misunderstood feature of TMJ massage is the intraoral component. People are often surprised to learn that TMJ massage commonly incorporates intraoral work, but this approach can be very effective.
Lymphatic Drainage
Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage, is a gentle form of massage used to relieve painful swelling in your arms and legs caused by lymphedema. Lymphedema often affects people recovering from breast cancer surgery.
Lymphedema happens when your tissues retain fluid left behind after your cardiovascular system sends blood to your tissues and organs.
The remaining fluid is called lymph. Normally, your lymphatic system collects your lymph and returns it to your heart via a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes. When something disrupts your lymphatic system’s process, lymph collects in your arms and legs, making them swell.
A registered massage therapist uses lymphatic drainage massage techniques to move lymph from your tissues to your lymph nodes, which eases the swelling in your tissues.
Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massages are adapted for the anatomical changes you go through during pregnancy. In a traditional massage, you might spend half the time lying face-down on your stomach (which is not possible with a baby belly) and half the time facing up (a position that puts pressure on a major blood vessel that can disrupt blood flow to your baby and leave you feeling nauseous).
But as your shape and posture changes, a trained massage therapist will make accommodations with special cushioning systems or holes that allow you to lie face down safely, while providing room for your growing belly and breasts. Or you might lie on your side with the support of pillows and cushions.
Research shows that massage can reduce stress hormones in your body and relax and loosen your muscles. It can also increase blood flow, which is so important when you're pregnant, and keep your lymphatic system working at peak efficiency. And it reconnects your mind with your body.
During pregnancy, regular prenatal massages may not only help you relax, but may also relieve:
Insomnia
Joint pain
Neck and back pain
Leg cramping
Sciatica
Swelling in your hands and feet (as long as that swelling isn't a result of preeclampsia)
Carpal tunnel pain
Headaches and sinus congestion
